Welcome to REBEL Research!

REBEL Research is an interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff, trainees, and students who are broadly interested in behavioral health issues in adolescence and early adulthood.

We have a number of ongoing observational research studies aimed at addressing critical public health research questions. Our work has been published extensively in top tier scientific journals, and has directly impacted policy.

Current Research Objectives

To investigate patterns of tobacco, cannabis, and other substance use in adolescence and early adulthood

To examine the consequences of initiation of tobacco, cannabis, and other substance use early in life

To identify risk factors for substance use initiation that can be targeted in regulatory efforts to reduce adolescent substance use

To evaluate the impact of changing regulatory policies on patterns of tobacco, cannabis, and other substance use

A note from Jessica Barrington-Trimis, Co-Director of REBEL Research

“I am so excited to introduce REBEL Research. The goal of this website is to highlight and share the amazing things that this research team has accomplished, and to keep you up to date on all things related to our research. I must start by acknowledging the incredible members of this outstanding team, without whom none of this would be possible. As I reflect back on the past few years, it is worth acknowledging the collective trauma that has impacted all our lives. This team has shown resilience and strength in the face of unfathomable adversity and has given me hope, inspiration, and a renewed passion for how we can change the world. Remember to take a moment, slow down, and find the beauty in life, each and every day.”

A note from Alyssa Harlow, Co-Director of REBEL Research

“At REBEL Research, we aim to address some of the biggest issues facing young people today by conducting innovative research that leverages state-of-the-art behavioral epidemiology methods. It is truly a privilege to be a part of this group of incredible faculty, staff, trainees, and students who are dedicated to making change for a healthier future.“

A note from Adam Leventhal, Former Director of HEAL

“REBEL is the representation of collaborative efforts and contributions we created with USC’s Health, Emotion, and Addiction Lab (HEAL). I am excited to see how Jessica and Alyssa continue this work as the new leaders of the team.”
